Understanding Surface Seal Coats
A seal coat is a protective liquid emulsion applied over existing asphalt pavements to seal micro-cracks, prevent oxidation from UV exposure, and inhibit water intrusion. It is not structural asphalt.
Seal Coat vs. Tack Coat vs. Prime Coat
- Seal Coat: Maintenance surface treatment applied to cured pavement.
- Tack Coat: Thin emulsion sprayed between asphalt lifts to bond old and new layers.
- Prime Coat: Low-viscosity binder sprayed onto untreated aggregate base before asphalt placement.
